Bubu
(1971)
ITALIAN LANGUAGE WITH ENGLISH

WIDE-SCREEN PICTURE
Directed by Mauro Bolognini, Italy
Bubu is perhaps one of the most heartbreaking films I have ever
seen, period. Lovely Ottavia Piccolo is Berta, a young woman who
succumbs to prostitution to support and keep the affections of
her lover, Bubu. He decides that he doesn’t want to work another
day in his life and Berta will be his meal ticket. Tragedy strikes
Berta every where she turns after catching syphilis from a client.
She appears to find hope and love with a young college student
named Piero, but even that falls through. I could honestly write
ten pages about this film. It is an amazing piece of work and
it touched me on so many levels. The score, though minimal, manages
to reinforce that feeling of hopelessness. What else can I say?
I just wish Hollywood would take a few notes from films of this
caliber. ~Melissa Kusia

Massimo Ranieri and Antonio Falsi as Bubu. Rated R |

Shadow (Skyggen af Emma, 1988) ENGLISH
SUBTITLED Directed by Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Denmark Eleven-year-old
Emma’s (Line Kruse) high class family never has time for her. So, she decides
to stage her own kidnapping after reading about one. Her adventures lead her to
Malthe (Zülow Börje Ahlstedt), a kindly ex-convict that works in the city sewers.
Though quite the odd couple, the two are kindred spirits that teach each other
the importance of love and acceptance. I left the film questioning the nature
of the relationship between Emma and Malthe. Don’t get me wrong, nothing inappropriate
is every insinuated. However, there is a sense that the love is more than friendly.
I suppose it doesn’t really matter what the answer is. The film is a treat due
to solid plot and acting. The film is set in the 1930s and Jacobsen captures the
era soundly. Films that are this poignant hardly ever come along. ~Melissa

In
the Beachouse (Casotto
aka In The Beach House, 1977) IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE WITH GREEK SUBTITLES
Directed by Sergio Citti, Italy If French director Jaques Tati were born in
Italy, had a much smaller budget and was somewhat of a pervert he probably would
have directed films like "In the Beachouse", a wildly offbeat comedy
with minimal plot! The entire movie more-or-less takes place in an ocean-side
dressing house, a series of reoccurring site-gags and hilarious character studies.
A real-time interaction between a large group of unusual people including 2 prostitutes
and their reluctant and somewhat bizarre client, an all-girl swim team, a large
black dog and a scene stealing white chihuahua, and a couple trying to get their
knocked-up under age grand daughter laid so they can pin the blame on some poor
schmuck and marry her off. The grand daughter, incidentally, is played by a nubile
Jody Foster (!!!) who probably doesn't mention this film much in her résumé!
With a mostly Italian cast including Ugo Tognazzi and featuring Catherine Deneuve
in a dream sequence. Rated R |

Insatiables
(Italian title: Femmine

UNCUT COMPOSITE EDIT, MOSTLY WIDE-SCREEN
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Directed by Alberto De Martino, Italy
An
Italian reporter in Los Angeles (Robert Hoffman) investigates
the supposed car “accident” that kills an old friend of his.
It seems his buddy had left Italy to become the spokesmodel
for a huge chemical products corporation only to get spoiled
by his new wealth and fame! The new celebrity’s scandalous behavior
causes the reporter to believe his buddy was bumped-off for
financial reasons. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that
almost everybody had a reason for wanting him dead! Had this
been a strictly U.S. production, this probably would’ve been
a typical t.v. movie-ish yawnfest, but Italian director De Martino
keeps things lively and swingin’! The second half really cuts
loose! A good amount of action and some nudity (with a gratuitous
psychedelic orgy scene common to the Italian flicks of this
era) keeps this stylish thriller’s roots firmly planted in Euro-trash
territory! Recommended! Note that a few of the restored
shots are not wide-screen but most of the movie is. Looks very
nice! Also with Dorothy Malone, Luciana Paluzzi, Frank Wolff,
John Ireland, Nicoletta Machiavelli, Ini Assmann, Rainer Basedow,
Roger Fritz and Romina Power. Rated R

Worn out and depressed, an army officer returns to his mansion
estate to recuperate from a battle. He is on the verge of suicide
when he begins to notice the servants' 11 year old niece (Katya
Berger) spying on him. His sudden love for the young girl brings
him out of his depression and he finds happiness in life again.
But why is he so fixated on the young girl? And what happens when
his love starts to turn obsessive despite the fact that he never
makes sexual advances towards her but remains a "gentleman"?
A classy drama from Spain with Ugo Bologna, Pierre Clémenti, José
Luis López Vázquez, Maria Monti, Paul Müller, Bárbara Rey and
future Italian horror director Michele Soavi. This wide-screen
version seems to be more of a director's cut that contains
more nudity from Katya Berger and excludes
some of the more gratuitous mildly erotic flashback flashes that
the man has from his past (we include these scenes as an extra
along with the trailer). Rated R |

Salomè
(1972)
IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
Directed by Carmelo Bene, Italy
Intentionally disjointed hyper-paced art film consisting entirely
of many short shots, pans, closeups, etc. A period piece, with
colorful shots that bring Kenneth Anger or a more psychedelic
Fellini’s “Satyricon” to mind! Bene himslf stars as Erode Antipa
/ Onorio, a king obsessed with his stepdaughter Salomè (Donyale
Luna) . Also with Lydia Mancinelli, Alfiero Vincenti, famous supermodel
Veruschka von Lehndorff and blink-and-you'll-miss-her Daria Nicolodi.
Some will love this experimental work (I did!) although it's manic
drive makes it a challenging view. Looks very nice! Rated R |

of his gentle blue eyes. As she and the ape's playful relationship
grows, Tanya's lover Lobo (Richard Sargent) becomes increasingly
more jealous, until he decides to try and kill Blue using an imprisoned
Tanya as bait! An underrated movie for sure, a few years later
when it was discovered that star Winters was aka singer Vanity,
much ballyhoo was made over her nude scenes and the subtle bestiality
overtones but really the movie is much more than that. Includes
the original theatrical trailer! Rated R |

Twinky
(aka Lola, 1969) Directed by Richard Donner, Italy / UK Set in
London, Lola tells the story of a middle-aged pornography writer (Bronson) falling
in love with and marrying a sixteen-year-old girl. The couple has the best of
intentions despite their age difference. Unfortunately, reality sets in and their
happiness starts to deteriorate. Charles Bronson stretches his acting bounds by
playing such an unusual character. The viewer gets to experience his sensitive
side. Susan George gives a decent performance as the love struck youngster, as
well. ~Melissa Kusia To
me "Lola" (known in the UK as "Twinky") was intended as a
comical drama showing the mishaps of the generation gap. I think on that level
it works very well! This is the movie that really put Susan George on the map.
Picture quality on this one looks very nice compared to some budget DVDs going
around. ~Brian H. |

light-hearted adventure from Jess Franco. Lina Romay is the
older prim-and-proper school teacher Miss Muro who looks after

Vortex
(To Prosopo tis medusas, 1966)
ENGLISH DIALOGUE
Directed by Nikos Koundouros, Greece
This film is set on a Greek island where three men are transfixed
by a young woman. The woman used to date the brother of one of
the men but he is now dead. Of course, the brother doesn’t know
of the other’s fate and wonders what became of him. Beyond this,
the film is just a conglomeration of scenes woven together to
create a bizarre and dark atmosphere. The film is shot in a way
that makes it seem like a “making of” segment one moment and a
real film the next. The film crew and director’s marquis are visible
in many scenes. This is a film that takes repeat viewings but
there is an obvious sexually destructive element. Surprisingly,
there is some very frank sexuality. The director displays full
male and female nudity and a very realistic sex scene. ~Melissa
