Brian Horrorwitz’s film Antena Criminal is not the first behind the scenes look at Franco at work. But it’s unquestionably the most detailed examination yet of his film making methods.

Brian’s camera is unrelenting in its search for the truth behind the Franco legend. He goes where few have gone before and casts great light on the reality of micro budget movie making. That in itself is fascinating enough. But the amazing thing is that still, even after this intimate, warts and all portrait, the mystique and the mystery of Franco remain. He is truly an enigma. Surely no-one will ever be able to explain or sum him up. To do that you would have to live inside his head. That’s a luxury none of us will ever have, but Antena Criminal brings us very close to it.

Look at Antena Criminal as not just a ‘how the movie was made’ documentary as it really is more than that. Yes, it’s cool to see Franco running around with a gun that he needs to use as a prop and it’s neat to see the cast and crew having drinks in front of a bondage set piece but the real heart of the film lies not in documenting the sets and performers but in giving us a chance to see man essentially feeding his addiction through his art. On that level, it’s a unique and truly interesting movie. Yes, like its subject it was shot with a very low budget but that’s only appropriate and it doesn’t stop the camera from capturing some interesting and intimate moments or from revealing a side of Franco that doesn’t come to light too often.

Brian, I just want to THANK you for showing this film. I loved it, and to be honest, it was a high-point during the (convention) weekend for me. I've recently (during the past 2-3 years) become a huge Jess Franco fan. I love his work! It was a treat to follow along behind-the-scenes during the making of BLIND TARGET, which I also picked up this weekend from one of the dealers. ... There were some things I really enjoyed about Antena Criminal: the in-your-face behind-the-scenes honesty, the music, the great shots of the very pretty ladies ;) It was interesting hearing Franco's explanation of his desire to shoot a film that was more political/social commentary than simple erotic thrill-ride. It was equally interesting to hear him ruminate on his feminist tendencies - BRAVO! ... Also, the scenes where the actors were having difficulties getting their lines right, and Franco quite frustrated (to put it mildly) were hilarious - a bellyful of laughs, to be sure. Oh, I'm sure this is all in hindsight, and while he wasn't laughing at the time, I'd reckon Franco'd find it amusing now. Further, I found watching some of his film making techniques to be quite enlightening. I'd always thought his more recent work especially was more guerilla-type film making. I was surprised to see how organized and structured he is behind the scenes - it only makes me appreciate more his ability to appear less polished after the final cut! ...

Filmed between late January and early February, 2000, during the beginning days of primary shooting for Spanish director Jess Franco’s 176th movie, “Blind Target”, by Brian Horrorwitz, this is only the second time in a career that spans over fifty years that Franco has allowed an outside individual to document his film making process. This behind-the-scenes documentary offers up a rare glimpse into the inspiration, techniques, pitfalls, and occasional flaring tempers behind low budget film making and shouldn’t be missed by any European movie buffs or Franco fans in attendance.
